Every client has a relationship with food and their body. Learn how to support your client whether they have disordered eating or an eating disorder.
First Day of the Workshop:
This program was created for the many professionals that come into contact with someone who may have an eating disorder. For anyone who feels nervous about how complicated treatment can be, or who may need a refresher course, this workshop is for you. Many changes have been made in the DSM over the years for diagnostic criteria for eating disorders. Learn about these changes, how to assess for an ED, and hear some of the latest treatment strategies.
Second Day of the Workshop:
We start the day off with learning about embodiment as a resource in ED recovery. ED behaviors are often strategies for managing a dysregulated nervous system. Developing an understanding of our nervous system and building interoceptive awareness skills moves us to greater embodiment. Embodiment is a process of learning to inhabit ourselves from the inside out rather than reflecting on it from the outside. This process allows us to access the body as a resource in recovery.
From there, we discuss attuned eating in a weight stigmatized culture, where we will learn how to approach clients from a harm reduction approach and philosophy. Educating the client in nutrition from a non-diet approach and philosophy is imperative to recovery. How do you incorporate a positive nutrition education that includes intuitive eating, mindfulness, and Health at Every Size Principles? As their therapist, it’s important you understand this part of the work.
Finally, we close it all out examining weight bias. You can expect education on cultural, systemic, and personal weight bias and how it can interfere with therapeutic work with our clients. We will discuss the research that supports the shift towards weight neutral care, what that looks like and provide participants tools to use in their practices.
An Introduction to Working with Eating Disorders has been approved by NBCC for NBCC credit. The Body, Beauty, and Bravery Project is solely responsible for all aspects of the program. NBCC approval number SP-3612. (10 CE hours)
EQUITY STATEMENT:
In the field of treating eating disorders there has been a huge discrepancy in the representation of BIPOC therapists and even having BIPOC clients. These populations are largely overlooked because it's assumed eating disorders are a 'rich white girl disease' when in reality these illnesses affect everyone. Because of this discrepancy, we are giving a significant discount to our BIPOC attendees and we no longer have to limit these numbers! Please share and refer this opportunity to any BIPOC mental health practitioners.
Meet Your Instructors:
Alison Cross, LCMHC and a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist and Approved Supervisor (CEDS-S), together with her colleagues Heidi Andersen from Reclaiming Beauty, MS, LCMHC-S, RYT, CEDS-S, Kendra Gaffney from Nutritious Thoughts, RD, LDN, CEDRD-S, and Jamie Earnhardt from Food and Body Rebels, LCMHC, have created an incredible program for mental health care providers wanting to learn more about how to treat someone with an eating disorder. The rates of eating disorders have doubled in the past 20 years and we all agree, this is our public health crisis! More folks need to know how to work with this complicated illness and its many caveats. Learn from some of this community's best in a collaborative, interactive, and creative environment. This workshop is pending 10 CE approval from NBCC.
